Meet Yrjo - The Alternative Dairy Co.

The Alternative Dairy Co is nothing without the Barista’s who everyday steam, stretch and pour our milk to create the best coffee experience in a cup.
They are the Nerds, Cat Lovers and Coffee Lovers behind the machine

Yrjo (or JO)

What’s your name, what do your friends call you?

Hello! My name is Yrjo but everyone calls me Jo

What’s the best thing about being a barista?

Where to start? From making great tasting coffee customers enjoy, the fast pace environment during rush hour to the delicate manual brewed coffee the fun is endless!

What’s The Best Moment Of Your Barista Career?

So far it was coming 2nd at Esspress yourself Latte Art Championships in 2019. Hoping to compete and learn more in the competitive coffee scene.

If you could change one thing for the better about the coffee/café industry what would it be?

That the general public would understand that there is more to the cup of coffee that they drink daily. From the land it grows on to the farmer to the roaster and the barista that makes it. And that it all needs to be paid for fairly.

How Do You Think New Zealand Barista Skills Stacks Up To The Wider World?

I honestly think that we have some of the best in the world. We have so many world class baristas if you know where to look!

What’s your best tip/trick when making coffee on dairy free milk?

Don’t heat it too hot. Having it too hot gives your coffee a slightly burnt taste will make your coffee taste funny.

What Do You Aspire To Be Both Professionally Or Personally?

That my little coffee roasting company would grow more and also be able to represent NZ in the world stage.

What’s one thing that people may not know about you that makes you a little alternative?

Outside of coffee, I am a dancer that dances with @Freshmansdancecrew.

Why do you love The Alterative Dairy Co Milks and which one is your favourite?

– I love about the ADC range is that they’re all compatible with coffee. From the taste to the performance of the milk when pouring, it’s got it all! And it’s really tricky to choose a favourite, but I’m leaning toward the Oat milk as it is just a really good oat milk.
