Local Pour: Why Taking a Moment Matters

In the heart of Christchurch, you'll find a café built on a simple idea: sometimes we all need to slow down. For nearly eight years, Emma and her team at Moment have been creating exactly that. A welcoming space where locals can pause between meetings, catch up with friends, enjoy a good brunch, and feel looked after. It's a philosophy that's baked into every part of the café, right down to its name.

More Than Just a Name

"The name of Moment comes from setting aside little moments in your day to yourself," says Emma.

"Life's so busy these days. We just want people to be able to come in and relax, have a really good cup and take a moment for themselves."

It's a simple idea, but one that resonates with anyone who's ever found comfort in a familiar café. Those places that become part of your routine. The ones where the team know your order, where conversations flow easily, and where taking ten minutes for yourself feels like time well spent.

For Emma, that's exactly what she hoped to create when she opened Moment in Christchurch's CBD. She loved the vibrancy of the city and the opportunity to be part of people's everyday lives. Whether it's a morning stop on the way to work or a weekend brunch with friends, the goal has always been the same: become a place people genuinely want to return to.

Built Around Genuine Hospitality

Ask Emma what she wants people to feel when they walk through the door, and the answer comes quickly.

"We're really big on genuine hospitality here, so we want everyone to come and feel like they're in their own lounge. This is like a second home for them."

It's a sentiment that feels increasingly rare in a fast-moving world. Yet it's also one of the reasons cafés remain such an important part of local communities.

Over the years, Moment has built strong relationships with its regulars, many of whom have supported the café since day one.

"We've built a really good relationship with all of our regulars over the last eight years, and they've been really supportive to our wee café."

You can feel that sense of connection throughout the space. It's welcoming without trying too hard. Familiar without being exclusive. The kind of place that instantly feels comfortable.

A Place Within the Community

Having spent most of her life working in hospitality, Emma understands the important role cafés play within their neighbourhoods.

She believes Christchurch's strong sense of community has helped shape the venue just as much as the venue has become part of the community itself.

"I think Christchurch is a really resilient, strong, bonded community. It's really nice to be able to have our little space in that."

Those community connections extend beyond the café walls. From supporting local suppliers where possible to creating a space where people can gather, Moment's story is one that's deeply tied to the city it calls home.

The Little Things Matter

After almost two decades in hospitality, Emma still finds joy in the simple things.

"I just think it's such a simple concept that you can make someone's day by just being kind to them and giving them a good cup, and I think it's quite rewarding work."

That philosophy sits at the heart of everything Moment does. Not big gestures. Not complicated ideas. Just showing up every day, looking after people and creating an experience worth coming back for.

It's also why hospitality remains one of the most important parts of café culture. Great food and drinks matter, but it's often the way a place makes you feel that keeps you returning.

Looking Ahead

Like many café owners, Emma spends most of her time focused on the day in front of her rather than long-term plans.

But there is one thing she knows for sure.

"We actually genuinely care about you and we want you to have a good time."

That's been the foundation of Moment for almost eight years, and it continues to guide everything they do today.

If you're ever in Christchurch and looking for a place to slow down, pull up a seat and take a moment. Chances are you'll feel right at home.
